The month of February started with my first trip abroad. My first trip was crossing the border to Shenzhen. Even though I have a student Visa for Hong Kong, I was required to get another Visa to just cross the border. The history and current state between China and Hong Kong is fascinating. We got Shenzhen through catching the MTR to the border and had to go through security as if we have just arrived in another country. In Shenzhen, the culture was definitely different from Hong Kong. The first thing I noticed was people smoking cigarettes almost everywhere in Shenzhen. In Hong Kong, it seems like there are certain smoking areas but in Shenzhen, it looked as any open air people could smoke. Also, it felt like mostly everyone didn't know English in Shenzhen. Luckily, we had a local come with us and show us around.

January has been a fun filled adventure. From exploring the new city to hiking on some of the nicest, toughest hikes I've been on. There are so many new things here to try and learn. The most important thing I've learned is how to get around from my hall to almost anywhere. I'm currently residing at R.C. Lee Hall which is about a mile and a half from the campus! I had to figure out which buses I should take for some of the buses cost twice as more. For hiking, I've been on the Victoria Peak hike and Sunset Peak hike. They were very brutal but the view from the top makes it worth it. Hiking's also a great way to make new friends.
I feel like Hong Kong gives the city life that Hawaii doesn't have. There are many cool things to see in the city and I'm beginning to absolutely love it here! I've arrived in Hong Kong the night before the main orientation. Arriving at night, I decided to take the train to Kowloon Island and from there I took the taxi to my dorm. It was pretty expensive but it was very convenient. I haven't brought any sleeping necessities with (blanket, pillow) so I asked the reception office if I could borrow some and luckily they could've let me borrow for it was freezing cold when I arrived. I remember sleeping in two light blankets, sweater, and long pants the first night.
The next day was the orientation and it is where I met a lot of the other students in my faculty. There was a good number of students and it's a very diverse crowd. The orientation is important for that's where you make new friends and also learn everything you need to know about the school and Hong Kong. They went over everything from signing up for classes (something I needed need to worry for it was taken care of at UH) to getting the student rate Octopus Card (recommend getting this ASAP). |
